Texas motorists should take full advantage of the online
services offered by the Texas DMV through the websites on
the Texas Department of
Transportation and Texas Department of Public Safety.
The Texas DMV offers online vehicle registration, renewal and titling,
and applications for specialty license plates through
the Texas DOT website. For the renewal of your driver's license, change of
address and similar services, check the Texas DMV links at the Texas DPS
website.
Although online transactions are definitely more convenient, some Texas DMV
services, like transfers of vehicle titles and applications for personalized
plates, are only available at County Tax offices. Those applying for a driver's
license for the first time must also make a personal appearance at the local
Texas DMV office locations.
Texas Auto Insurance Laws
Texas auto insurance laws have financial responsibility requirements,
meaning drivers must have proof of their capacity to pay in case of accidents.
The
easiest way to do this is to have liability coverage through a Texas
auto insurance company. The basic coverage required by
Texas driving laws is 20/40/15,
which translates
to
a maximum
coverage of $40,000 for injuries, with a $20,000 cap for each individual
hurt in the
accident, and $15,000 for damage to property. Auto owners who bought their
car through financing may also be expected to carry comprehensive auto
insurance. Under Texas driving laws, proof of Texas auto insurance must
be presented during vehicle registration, and in the event of an accident.
In 2001, Texas auto insurance laws introduced a new kind of auto insurance
to the state. Texas auto insurance companies are now allowed to offer auto
insurance on a "pay as you drive" or "cents per mile" basis.
Vehicle owners have the option to buy Texas auto insurance based on a per mile
rate instead of the usual fixed annual fee. Low-mileage drivers could end up
paying substantially smaller premiums.
Many Texas auto insurance companies are members of the
Texas Better Business Bureau. The Texas BBB provides information
on its member companies, consumer guides, and serves as a good venue for
customer complaints. Auto insurance consumers especially, can generate
company reports on Texas auto insurance companies to see
if they have complaints at present. Two of the Texas BBB serving
Texas with online services are at http://www.centraltx.bbb.org and http://www.bbbhou.org.
